"Succeeding takes more than technical skill, inspiration or simple forbearance. It incorporates your state of mind, your powers of thought and expression, your self-discipline and your strength of character."

Kids Heart Authors - Eric Carle Museum

It's always a pleasure to go to the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, and today was an extra special day!

Artists/Authors scheduled for the day:

Corinne Demas and Bob Alley

Lesléa Newman

Giles LaRoche and April Jones

Jeff Mack

Alissa Imre Geis

David Biedrzcki

I caught several shots on my little camera, enjoy!

Best of all, I saw a dear friend from college who I hadn't seen in a very long time - and met her little girl! It was wonderful to see you again, Deb!

QCC past

Interestingly, about 10 years ago I was part of a group show at the very same QCC gallery space! I found a photo from then:

This was my debut into the world of children's books. This was when I decided I wanted to illustrate for children, joined SCBWI, and worked on my portfolio. Here you can see illustrations I did for a book I wrote called "From a Crow's Eye View".
The story never went anywhere, but it was a great learning experience, and just the boost I needed at the time.

I wish I could remember all the other artists in the exhibit at the time, but the only one I remember is Benjamin Adwetewa-Badu who had gorgeous paintings. In his art, he had some akinkdra symbols, one of which was the gye nyame. During his talk, I was so moved by his explanation of this symbol (which I'd never heard before) that I was inspired to include this symbol in my future picture books.

So, in ALMOST every book, I have that symbol hidden somewhere! A fabric pattern, a decorative bracelet, a border. It's swirly-looking, and reminds me of the design on my engagement ring.
It means something like "the creator always protects his creations" or "God is omnipotent".

Artist Reception at QCC

Last night was a lovely reception at Quinsigamond Community College for
NO MUSH TODAY and for HORIZONS - paintings by Erika Davis Wade.

Some of these photos were taken by me, and others by my friend and co-worker Jessica. Thanks, Jess!

I met so many wonderful people and I really felt at ease, even during my gallery talk. Special thanks to
Malissa , Jan, Diane, and Vincent.

News Flash! Art Show Postponed due to weather...

The opening reception for tonight at Quinsigamond has been postponed due to bad weather. They will call me tomorrow with a new date - and I'll post it as soon as I know!

Thanks to all my friends and colleagues who were planning to attend - and now maybe those who couldn't make it will be able to go to the new date!

The Brown Bookshelf

There's a nice interview posted here on the Brown Bookshelf's 28 Days Later by Don Tate! Check them out every day this month for an awesome introduction to many african-american children's book authors and illustrators.

Special thanks to Don Tate and the crew at The Brown Bookshelf, who take time out of their busy schedules
to put together awesome things like this!
